UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN EDISON ON APRIL 20, 1984

On April 20, 1984 at approximately 1:00 AM, security guard John Lawson, age 50, was found dead in the parking lot at the Private Formulations Inc. in Edison at 460 Plainfield Avenue, where he was employed.

Lawson was believed to have left work at approximately 7:30 PM the previous night, according to coworkers. His pockets were emptied and his car was missing, a possible victim of a robbery that escalated fatally.

Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 1:42 AM the same day.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN THE CITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK ON SEPTEMBER 19, 1983

On Monday, September 19, 1983 at approximately 3 AM officers responded to reports of a man lying in the road in front of 27 Richmond Street in New Brunswick. Upon arrival at the address it was discovered that the victim was Harry Hawk.

Hawk, still alive, was taken to Middlesex General Hospital to be treated for multiple injuries. After nearly a week`s hospitalization, Hawk died in the hospital on September 25, 1983. An autopsy was performed and determined he died from the injuries he sustained during an attack on September 19.

Hawk, 35, lived on Cedar Lane in Highland Park.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN PERTH AMBOY ON JANUARY 10, 1985

On the night of January 10, 1985, Douglas E. Paul Sr., a resident of 390 Church Street, Belford, NJ, was found dead in his 1977 Chrysler New Yorker, two door model, opposite 743 Parker Street, Perth Amboy, NJ. It is unknown what time the homicide occurred.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN EDISION ON MARCH 21, 1986

On March 21, 1986 between 11 PM and 3 AM, Christopher Brown, a resident of Cedar Arms Apartment, was found dead at the Hess Gas Station, where he worked, on Route 27 and Highway Terrace in Edison, NJ. It is unknown at what point in the night the homicide occurred.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN PERTH AMBOY ON APRIL 18, 1986

On April 18, 1986 the owner of Poor John`s Pub, John Piwowarski, was found dead inside his bar at approximately 10:30 PM. The police were called and Piwowarski was pronounced dead about twenty minutes later. He died from wounds suffered from an attack by an unknown assailant.

The victim was a resident of Perth Amboy, Caucasian, 32 years old, approximately 5` 9" with brown hair and green eyes.

The bar was located at 494 Amboy Avenue in Perth Amboy, NJ.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN THE CITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK ON APRIL 6, 1985

On April 6, 1985 at approximately 8 AM the body of Sylvia Parson was found in Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick.

Her body was discovered near the edge of the park by a jogger who notified police. An autopsy determined that she died from injuries sustained during an attack that occurred sometime the night before.

Parson, 24, lived on Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick and had a young daughter.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE AT METROPARK TRAIN STATION ON DECEMBER 11, 1981

During a routine check of the Metropark Train Station on December 13, 1981, a police officer noticed a brown and beige 1971 Dodge Sportsman Van left in the southeast corner of the parking lot. Upon inspection, the officer noticed the body of a man lying in the back of the vehicle. After entering the vehicle, the officer noted what appeared to be large amounts of dried blood surrounding the victim and immediately called for back up.

The body of the man was later identified as that of 50-year-old Joseph Victor of Linden NJ. After an autopsy was performed, Victor was believed to have been the victim of a homicide two days prior, on December 11, 1981. He died from wounds inflicted during an attack by unknown assailants.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN PERTH AMBOY ON NOVEMBER 27, 1982

On Saturday, November 27, 1982 at approximately 7:30 AM the body of Claudette Watson, 21, was found in a wooded area behind Madison Liquors at 893 Convery Boulevard in Perth Amboy. Her body was discovered that morning by a man walking his dog and an autopsy later determined that she died from multiple wounds sustained during an attack by an unknown assailant.

Watson lived on Sofield Avenue in Perth Amboy and was last seen at midnight of November 27, 1982 on the corner of Smith and Oak in Perth Amboy. She was on her way to a party.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN WOODBRIDGE ON OCTOBER 17, 1982

On October 17, 1982 police were dispatched to a possible homicide in Woodbridge NJ. When police arrived on the scene the body of Walter Andrews was found lying face down, dead and apparently having been beaten, in the yard of a previously burned-out home which he still owned on Pearle Street. His body was discovered at approximately 11 AM.

The victim resided at 35 Willry street in Woodbridge at the time of his death, but still owned his home on Pearle Street and would return frequently to feed his dogs and birds. He was believed to have been engaged in an ongoing dispute with members of his neighborhood and feared that his foes would hurt his dogs and do damage to his property.

Walter was believed to have last been seen alive at 3:00 PM the previous day. He was pronounced dead at the Perth Amboy General Hospital Morgue at 1:45 PM the same day his body was discovered.

Murder motive eludes police

NEW BRUNSWICK- Robbery has been ruled out in the murder of a Woodbridge Township man over the weekend, but authorities are still trying to find a motive for the fatal bludgeoning.

Middlesex county investigators and township police are trying to reconstruct the last hours of the life of 73-year-old Walter Andrews of 35 Willry Street.

Andrews was found Sunday in a pool of blood outside his Pearle Avenue home, which he had been forced to vacate after a 1978 fire. He still returned to the site to walk and feed five dogs and pigeons, police said.

"We have not rued out anything yet, although it doesn`t appear he was robbed," county Prosecutor Richard Rebeck said.

Rebeck noted that the victim`s wallet, with money inside, was found nearby.

Andrews died of extensive hemorrhaging due to skull fractures, the prosecutor said. The fractures were caused by "four heavy blows," he said.

Rebeck declined to comment on police reports that a piece of wood, believed to be the murder weapon, was found on scene.

The body was wrapped in dog chain, Rebeck said, apparently because one of the dogs, a mutt, had been tied up nearby, and "went crazy" when the murder occurred. The dog was "friendly," he said, and apparently circled the body because he was upset.

Andrews was last seen by his land lady at 3PM on Saturday.

The landlady found the body at 11 AM Sunday between the abandoned house and garage, police said, after she had become concerned over his disappearance.

Rebeck said that Andrews routinely ate at the Woodbridge diner on Amboy Avenue, but that he had not done so the day he disappeared.

"We are canvassing people he knew," the prosecutor said.

"We are interested in finding out where he was between 3 PM Saturday and the time of his death."

Andrews was "well-known" in that section of the township, he said. According to landlady Susan Catenacci, the victim followed a routine closely.

He ate regularly at the Woodbridge Diner and then returned to the Willry Street room where he changed for work.

He worked as a security guard for Atlas Guard Service Inc. at the One Woodbridge Center office off Route 9. Andrews worked between 4:30PM and 9PM, she said.

He would have another meal at the diner after work, and go to Pearle Avenue to feed the pigeons and dogs, she said.

Mrs. Catenacci described him as a "gentle animal lover."

County Capt. Alex Belluscio agreed, noting that the victim "appeared to take good care of his pets."

Andrews had five dogs, including three Doberman pinschers, one German Shepherd, and the mutt, Rebeck said. He also kept coops of pigeons.

Two dogs perished in the September 1978 fire which "gutted" the Pearl Avenue home, Belluscio said.

Andrews, who served for 20 years in the armed services and was a veteran of World War II, had been divorced from his wife for many years, Rebeck said.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE NEAR RARITAN CENTER ON OCTOBER 22, 1980

On October 22, 1980 the decomposed body of Herman Cunningham was found in a mound of sandy clay in the Raritan Industrial Park Complex and was pronounced dead at 3:04 PM the same day. His body was partially skeletonized as he was believed to have died two months prior to the discovery of the body due to fatal injuries sustained during an assault by an unknown assailant.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN NORTH BRUNSWICK ON JULY 3, 1980

On July 3, 1980 at 8:46 p.m., the body of Marvin N. Sammel was found at 25 Hidden Lake Drive, North Brunswick, N.J. The homicide was reported by Barbara Gordon, the owner of the premises who had also been a victim of the attack.

It is believed that there are two suspects, both white males in their early 20’s with dark hair and dark complexions, possibly of Italian or Spanish decent. The victim Barbara Gordon described a possible suspect vehicle as a “mustard” colored vehicle which was parked in front of the 25 Hidden Lake residence.

MAN SHOT TO DEATH, WOMAN WOUNDED BY INTRUDERS IN HIDDEN LAKE HOME

NORTH BRUNSWICK – A 37-year-old man, Marvin Sammel, is dead and his 37-year-old host, Barbara Gordon, is in stable condition today at Middlesex General Hospital, New Brunswick, after they were targets of a gun-wielding assassin Thursday night in her home, 25 Hidden Lake Drive, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Richard S. Rebeck.

Sammel, who is separated from his wife, Marsha, of East Windsor, and Mrs. Gordon, who is divorced from her husband, Dr. Barry Gordon of Brooklyn, N.Y. were engaged in a friendly game of Scrabble in the family room when the doorbell rang, the prosecutor said.

When she opened the door two men rushed in, Rebeck added. The gunman forced Sammel to an upstairs bedroom, where two shots were fired into his head; the other man held Mrs. Gordon at knifepoint in the kitchen. The gunman then came to the kitchen and fired two quick shots at her head, one of which struck her, and she fell to the floor feigning death, Rebeck said.

After the intruders departed, the woman crawled to a telephone and alerted police.

Sammel died at 6 a.m. yesterday and Mrs. Gordon is in stable condition today, according to a hospital spokesman.

Police, who believe the two were shot with either a .32-caliber or .38-caliber snub-nosed revolver, have been unable to establish a motive for the shootings. There was no indication of anything having been taken from the sparsely furnished home, the prosecutor said.

Police throughout the east were alerted to be on the lookout for a late-model yellow Lincoln Continental with a landau roof that was seen leaving the neighborhood and heading toward Route 1. The license plate is believed to contain the letters KTY.

The car was believed to be occupied by three or four white males, who are believed to be armed and dangerous. One of the men was described as being of medium build with medium-length dark hair, wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt. A second man was described as being of heavy build with a thin mustache and also wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt. No descriptions were available of the other occupants.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN WOODBRIDGE ON OCTOBER 6, 1980

On Monday, October 6, 1980 at approximately 3 PM the body of Melvin Hopkins, 21, was found in the trunk of his silver Pontiac under the Driscoll and Edison bridges in the Keasbey section of Woodbridge Township. An autopsy determined that he was beaten and died from multiple stab wounds.

Hopkins lived on Prospect Avenue in Avenel, and was both a roofer and the lead singer of a New Jersey rock band known as "High Voltage." He was last seen by his father the night of October 5, 1980.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN NORTH BRUNSWICK ON NOVEMBER 8, 1980

On November 8, 1980 at approximately 10:03 PM, Giacomo Carollo, a resident of 903 Lee Avenue, North Brunswick, NJ was found dead at the corner of Haverford and Lee. It is believed that he was shot in his driveway and was pronounced dead on arrival.

It is believed that the suspect escaped in a small reddish car, possibly a Mercedes, heading south on Lee Avenue.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN EDISON ON FEBRUARY 6, 1981

On Friday, February 6, 1981 at approximately 1 AM the body of Lawrence Smith was found shot to death on the grounds of the Apco Extrusions factory at 180 National Road in Edison.

Smith was the foreman of Apco Extrusions and his body was discovered by employees finishing up the second shift at the plant that evening. An autopsy later confirmed that he died from gunshot wounds sustained during an attack that occurred on the grounds of the factory.

Smith, 28, lived on Village Green Way in Hazlet with his family.

On Thursday, January 15, 1981, at approximately 2 PM a body was found in a field on Rahway Avenue in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township. That body was later identified to be 44 year old Jesse Grezzielle. An autopsy determined that she died from wounds suffered during an attack sometime the day before.

Grezzielle lived on Randolph Road in Plainfield and was last seen at around 6:30 PM on January 14, 1981 when she was on her way to an encounter group meeting at the Adult Diagnostic Center in Avenel.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN EDISON ON OCTOBER 1, 1981

On October 1, 1981 at approximately 7:46 PM officers responded to reports of a robbery at the Dreamland Card and Gift Shop on Oak Tree Road in Edison. Upon arriving at the scene they discovered that during the robbery one of the gift shop owners, Dilipkumar Patel, was murdered.

The victim`s brother and fellow shop owner, Bhanu Patel, was also present during the robbery. He told officers that two men entered the shop at approximately 7:45 PM and proceeded to take the money from the cash register and attack his brother. Dilipkumar died from injuries sustained during this attack.

Bhanu described the suspects as two black men, both thin, one around 5`7" and between 20 and 25 years old, wearing a waist length black leather jacket while the other was around 5`9" and 25 years old, wearing a dark colored waist length coat and a hat with no brim.

Dilipkumar, 37, lived near his shop on Sandalwood Drive in Edison.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN EDISON ON JANUARY 16, 1979

On January 16, 1979 police were dispatched at approximately 10:48PM to a possible homicide at the Westinghouse Corporate Trucking Company on Route 1 and East Side Avenue in Edison, NJ. A woman who lived near the scene stated that she heard three loud noises that sounded like the backfire of a truck or gunshots.

 When she looked out her window she saw a fleeing suspect described as a white male, approximately 5`11" to 6` in height, medium build, 180 lbs. The suspect had brown or black hair relatively short and was wearing an oxblood leather jacket approximately waist length with dark pants. She grew suspicious when she noticed the truck was  running but hadn`t moved for a few minutes and then called police.

Upon arrival, police found the victim, Karl Protze, lying on the ground suffering from wounds sustained during an attack by an unidentified suspect. Protze was getting into his work vehicle, a beige and white 1978 Chevy pickup truck, when the incident took place.

Protze was transported to Middlesex General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:40 PM.

UNIDENTIFIED BODY FOUND ON TURNPIKE ON APRIL 10, 1979

On April 10, 1979 at approximately 5:56 PM, the remains of an unidentified woman were found near milepost 79.8 southbound of the NJ Turnpike by a passerby. The woman was described as either black or Hispanic, young, aged 18-30, 5`2" and 105 lbs.

Despite numerous attempts by authorities and the community to identify this woman, her identity remains a mystery.

The woman suffered from wounds inflicted during an assault by unknown suspects.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE IN PERTH AMBOY ON MARCH 30, 1979

On Friday March 30, 1979 at approximately 12 PM Alvaro Gordillo, 27, was found dead in his apartment at 826 Harned St. in Perth Amboy. He was found by the apartment complex superintendent at least two days after being attacked and killed, police determined.

Gordillo had moved to Perth Amboy from Elizabeth in 1978, where he`d worked at the Allen Packing Company until it went out of business in October of the same year.

He is thought to have last been seen buying dinner at a Gino`s chicken restaurant about a quarter mile from his apartment.
