On April 29, 2015, twenty rolls of fake quarters, really all-thread pipe, were turned in to the Juneau Police Department. Earlier this month a business owner had gotten what he thought was a roll of quarters from Wells Fargo in the Mendenhall Valley in Juneau. He later found he had a piece of all-thread pipe in a quarter wrapper with one real quarter on each end. When he returned the item to the bank, staff remembered the Crime Line report from April 16 that referenced pipe in quarter wrappers as part of a fraud. A bank employee began an internal review and found the branch was in possession of a total of 20 fake rolls of quarters. The bank staff traced the fraud to a man who brought the rolls in on April 6th. The bank is in the process of recovering surveillance video from that transaction.
JPD is asking banks and businesses to examine their rolls of quarters. Based on the investigation, it is possible there are 50 or more of the rolls still at large. The longer it takes to discover the fraud the more likely it is that evidence, like surveillance video, will be lost.
****************Update***************Update*************Update*********Craig Allan Porter was taken into custody without incident yesterday afternoon when he was found on the ferry M/V Kennicott as it docked in Ketchikan. He was traveling under a false name.
This Crime Line request for information was posted about 10:00 a.m. on April 16, 2015. By 11:45 a.m., JPD had received an anonymous tip that Porter had left Juneau on a ferry the previous afternoon bound for Bellingham. That ferry was scheduled to dock in Ketchikan about an hour after the tip came in. JPD contacted the Ketchikan Police Department and asked for an agency assist as well as coordinating with ferry security. At about 12:45 p.m., KPD officers met the just docked ferry and contacted a man matching Porter’s description. Their investigation revealed that the name and identification the man had was false and he false information to law enforcement. Additional charges stemming from open cases in Juneau are also expected.

Officers of the Juneau Police Department have been looking for 29 year old Craig Allan Porter in connection with a string of frauds and thefts that started in late March and continued into last week. Porter now has a $5,000 warrant stemming from two charges of forgery. Porter is a person of interest in several additional cases.
Current investigations show Porter used financial information from a former employer to buy 24 feet of one inch diameter threaded pipe. In a later case, a piece of threaded pipe was found in a wrapper meant for quarters. An associate of Porter’s tried to use the pipe in a wrapper at a local store. JPD asks that any business taking rolled quarters check the contents of the wrapper carefully before accepting the quarters. If this tactic is found again, please retain the item and call JPD.
Porter tried to leave Juneau 4-13-15 and fled when questioned by a JPD officer stationed at the airport. The current $5,000 warrant issued the next day.

The Juneau Police Department would like to contact a woman who is believed to have backed a red Toyota Tacoma pickup into a Mazda Protégé on December 9, 2014. The incident took place in the Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union parking lot in the 9000 block of Glacier Highway.
The damage to the Mazda was not extensive and it is possible the woman driving the pickup was not aware she had damaged a vehicle. Security footage does show the incident. The picture being released is of the driver when she was inside the bank.

The Juneau Police Department is looking for a Grinch who stole Christmas, or at least stole Christmas gifts. A disabled man who lives on a fixed income had saved up to buy his wife a pendant and matching earrings for Christmas this year. The evening of Christmas Eve he went to Fred Meyer and purchased the items. After the man paid for the jewelry he was struggling with some mobility issues and either dropped the bag containing the jewelry or looked away from the cart at the wrong time. Some then took the bag containing the jewelry, worth $700.
With the help of the receipt and Fred Meyer staff this picture of a similar pendant was located. The earrings match the pendant with a small diamond above oval cut Tanzanite.

Between the night of December 16th and the morning of December 17th, there was a burglary of a Juneau spa called "Rejuvenation" at 3017 Clinton Drive near Safeway. The main door had a window broken which is how the suspect accessed to the business. The safe at the business was taken, probably without being opened. It is believed the suspect will need commercial grade tools to open the safe. The safe is designed to need a combination put into a digital key pad plus a key to open.
Witnesses say there has been a suspicious dark colored box van frequenting that area over the last week. That van may be associated with this burglary.

The suspect or suspects took dozens of items including costume jewelry, antique fishing equipment, foreign and collectable coins and currency, native style carvings, and silver-spoons. The total volume of property would be substantial to carry. The total value of the property is well over $5,000.
The suspect left behind sleeping bag stuff sacks. Two of the stuff sacks were blue and tan and were a Walmart brand called Ozark Trails. One stuff sack was orange and was a Fred Meyer brand called Glacier Edge.
